Stanwich Students Stock Shelves at Food Bank

Stanwich is Stocking Shelves

At The Stanwich School, an essential part of the school’s mission is to “promote awareness of and service to others.” In the Junior House, grades 7 through 9, community service assumes a new level of importance. Students are divided into teams, and under the supervision of a faculty member, each team volunteers on-site at a particular community organization on a monthly basis throughout the school year.

Current community organizations supported by Stanwich include Greenwich Green & Clean, Stamford Nature Center, Stamford Food Bank, St. Luke’s LifeWorks, New Canaan Nature Center, Waterside School, Person to Person, Greenwich Adult Day Care Center, and Kids in Crisis. These regular on-site visits give students tangible experience working to better themselves and others.

“Instilling a commitment to volunteerism among our students is an integral part of our mission,” says Jerome Murphy, Head of Junior House.

Since its inception, the school has pro-actively reached out to and established meaningful relationships with numerous organizations in Greenwich, Stamford, New York City and other neighboring communities, as well as Costa Rica and Rwanda.

Pictured are Stanwich eighth-graders Elizabeth Robinson, Bennett Cooper, Andrew Mosellie, and Avery Wasson who recently donated their time stocking shelves at the Stamford Food Bank. The Food Bank is the area’s primary hunger-relief organization and serves more than 150,000 individuals each year.
