2,400 Powerless in Heat Wave

CL&P says circuit failures have caused outages in mid- to backcountry areas.

is asking Greenwich residents to conserve power as several major power circuits have failed, leaving about 2,400 customers without power.

In an effort to provide customers some relief from the record-breaking heat and humidity, the company has established a cooling center open to the public at the  , 1800 E. Putnam Ave. in Old Greenwich.

CL & P is experiencing complications with their delivery system with outages predominantly - but not exclusively - centered along the Merritt Parkway corridor.

According to a statement issued by First Selectman Peter Tesei’s office, during Wednesday night, a major circuit failed along East Putnam Avenue and Fairfield Road. After CL&P repaired the line and re-energized it, the circuit failed once again this time damaging several other circuits.

These equipment failures have been compounded by the high energy demand of the last 36 to 48 hours.

According to the statement issued about 4:30 p.m. Thursday,  CL&P does not have an estimated restoration time for its customers without power.

The , in conjunction with the , has activated the emergency cooling and reception center at the , at the corner of Pemberwick and Glenville roads, This facility will have water and reliable electrical service for personal communication devices and will be open until further notice.

Other cooling locations are the , 101 W. Putnam Ave., which will be open tonight until 9 p.m. as well as the , 20 Mead Ave., which will be open through 8 p.m.

And according to a member of the Round Hill Association, its annual meeting scheduled for this evening has been postponed until June 22 because of the outage.
