Bicyclist Faces Charges of Leaving Accident Scene

A man riding a bike in Riverside just before 1 a.m. Nov. 20 has been arrested by Greenwich Police on charges he left his his car parked in Old Greenwich after a crash with a parked SUV.

According to a Greenwich Police report, John R. Simpson, 49, of 500 River Rd., Cos Cob, was charged with evading responsibility, distracted driving and unsafe movement in connection with the crash that occurred on Sound Beach Avenue near Lockwood Avenue in Old Greenwich.

When police stopped Simpson, he was riding a bicycle on Sheephill Road in the Riverside section. He told police his car was disabled and parked in front of the Old Greenwich School on Sound Beach Avenue.

When officers checked Simpson's car, they found it had "disabling damage to the front right fender and bumper and a rail of fluids, vehicle debris and gouge marks on the road on Sound Beach, southbound to Lockwood Avenue." According to the report, a Mercedes SUV parked on the shoulder of the road near the intersection had "damage to the left rear bumper and quarter panel. Simpson admitted he was responsible for the accident and walked away from it."

He posted a $100 bond and was scheduled to appear Nov. 28 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

A town man surrendered to Greenwich Police who obtained an arrest warrant charging him with leaving an accident scene back in October.

According to a Greenwich Police report, Derek vanVliet, 43, of 524 W. Lyon Farm, surrendered to police on Nov. 16. He was charged with evading responsibility in connection with an Oct. 7 crash that occurred just before 1 a.m. Oct. 7.

VanVliet was released on a $250 bond and scheduled to appear Nov. 30 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
