FCIAC Boys Basketball Playoff Race Heading Toward Conclusion
Eight teams still mathematically alive for final three playoff spots
There are so many tiebreaker scenarios at play heading into the final day of the FCIAC boys basketball season on Wednesday that it might take the NFL gurus to figure them all out.
There are eight teams -- Stamford at 10-7, Bridgeport Central, Danbury, Greenwich, Fairfield Warde and Trumbull at 9-8 and even Fairfield Ludlowe and Staples at 8-9 -- still in contention for the final three playoff spots, although the latter two may need divine intervention to get in.
It is possible for the season to end with six teams tied at 9-9. The reason it can't be seven is because Danbury and Greenwich play each other.
But consider the following: Central loses to McMahon, Warde loses to St. Joseph, Trumbull loses to Trinity Catholic, Ludlowe beats Darien and Staples beats Bassick.
Central, Warde, Trumbull, Ludlowe and Staples finish in six-way tie for the final playoff spot at 9-9 with the Danbury-Greenwich loser. Stamford would have clinched a playoff spot as would the Danbury-Greenwich winner with 10 wins.
The FCIAC would have to bring out the slide rules to figure out that tie.
Still, if a few games go according to the way they should on paper, things actually could be settled quite smoothly.
Stamford can't be part of a tie at 9-9, but it could at 10-8. Still, it is hard to imagine Stamford losing to a Harding team that is coming off a loss to New Canaan, so pencil the Black Knights in for a playoff spot.
Central has been up and down. But given what's a stake, it's also had to believe the Hilltoppers will lose to McMahon, although the Senators are coming off a win against Staples. Give the Hilltoppers a playoff spot as well.
Warde is definitely in with a win, but the Falcons will have to knock off the top-ranked and undefeated Cadets. St. Joseph may or may not be unbeatable. The Cadets have had a few close calls down the stretch. Still, you figure they'll be highly motivated by the prospect of making a run at an undefeated season.
The most intriguing game of the night could be the Trinity Catholic at Trumbull clash. As talented as they may be, the Crusaders have had the tendency to not sure up on occasion and they really have little to play for against the Eagles, who have everything to play for.
If Warde and Trumbull pull the upsets, they can forge a four-way tie at 10-8 with Bridgeport Central (assuming a win over McMahon) and the Greenwich-Danbury winners.
But if they don't, things actually can become pretty simple. Stamford clinches with a win over Harding and Central does the same with a win over McMahon. The final playoff spot then goes to the winner of the Greenwich-Danbury contest, which becomes a playin game.
And the FCIAC officials put away the slide rules.
