First Selectman to Appeal Central Firehouse Decision

Delay in funding firehouse construction could have dire consequences Tesei says.

First Selectman Peter Tesei said he will appeal to the 12-member to overturn the board's budget committee recommendation not to fully fund the proposed $24 million construction project.

At Thursday's bi-weekly meeting, Tesei made it clear that only funding the engineering portion of the project and denying money to relocate the eight firefighters from Central Station to temporary quarters to be built on a portion of the Horseneck Lane commuter parking lot. In other business, Parks and Recreation Director Joseph Siciliano and Parks and Recreation Commission member John Craine told the selectmen that a draft recommendation on how to plan and regulate the town's waterways is being written. The "Waterways Vision for the Town of Greenwich" will be the culmination of a two-year review of how the town's 27 miles of waterfront are used.

"It is the largest coastal resource in the state of Connecticut. There are seven harbors, three federal navigation waterways, 700 moorings and 1,300 slips that are community, private, or belong to yacht clubs," according to Craine, who heads up the committee handling the study. The Waterways Visions, Craine said, will give the town an opportunity to assume control of regulating the waterways while protecting the environment.

A 30-page summary of objectives  along with 12 recommendations on how to accomplish the Waterways Visions will be completed in April. A formal presentation of the summary will be presented top the selectmen in May.
