There was nothing that was going to stand in the way of Rink & Racquet's quest to win another title in the George M Weiss Greenwich Senior Babe Ruth League.

Rink & Racquet captured its league-record fourth consecutive championship Wednesday with a 16-2 drubbing of Redmen at Greenwich High School.

Sperry Edwards' RBI single gave Redmen a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but R & R answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning. It then broke open ithe contest in the fourth, scoring five runs despite managing only one hit in the frame.

In the inning, R &R made the most of four errors and two walks to extend its lead to 8-2.

Alex Jonokuchi struck out six in a complete-game effort for R & R, which put away the contest with five more runs in the fifth, when  Perry Hopper and Sam Fraser each had two-run doubles.

-- The Greenwich 14-year-old Babe Ruth team defeated Darien 4-2 Wednesday to advance to the finals of the District Four tournament. Darien and Stamford will play on Thursday to determine Greenwich's opponent in the best-of-three championship series.

In the 15-year-old tournament, Stamford routed Greenwich 15-4 in six innings to clinch a berth in the finals, also a two-out-of-three series.

Stamford was coming off a 14-0 win against Darien om Tuesday. In the finals, it will play the winner of Thursday's game between Darien and Greenwich.

Add NHL Hall of Famer and five-time Stanley Cup winner Glenn Anderson to the list of players who have committed to play in the Big Assist III, which is set for 7 p.m on July 13 at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.

Anderson, who runs a hockey school at Terry Conners, played in last year's game and promised to return.

The hockey exhibition game is hosted by Darien native Ryan Shannon, who is currently a free agent after spending the previous three seasons with the Ottawa Senators.

The game raises money for the Obie Harrington-Howes Foundation, which supports individuals with spinal injury and disease.

The Redmen faced Rink&Racquet on Wednesday at Greenwich High School in the finals of the town's senior Babe Ruth playoffs.

Rink & Racquet, which reached the final with a 9-4 victory over BANC in the winner's bracket final on Friday, was looking to become the first team in the league's history to win the championship for four consecutive years.

 -- In the 13-year-old District One baseball tournament, Greenwich took on Stamford on Wednesday. And in the 15s, Greenwich faced Stamford on Wednesday and plays Darien on Thursday.

-- The Greenwich Point 1-Mile Swim gets under way Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at Tod's Point in Old Greenwich.

The pre-entry fee for adults aged 19 and older is $40 for entries postmarked by July 1, and the fee is $50 thereafter. The fee for participants aged 18 and under is $20. For more info, visit www.threadsandtreads.com or call 203-661-0142.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three overall finishers and top three in all five-year age groups. Wetsuits are allowed, but will be ineligible for awards. The swim is part of the Stamford Greenwich Cup series.
