The boys hockey team lost a heartbreaker Wednesday night at the Shelton Rinks.

Matt Julian scored the winning goal with just 15 seconds left in regulation, giving St. Joseph a wild 6-5 victory over the Cardinals.

Julian's goal came after Greenwich had rallied from a 4-0 deficit early in the second period to tie the game just over five minutes into the third.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Cardinals, who dropped to 1-7. Four of the defeats during the streak have come by one goal, including the last three.

Sophomore Brett Backman scored a hat trick to spark Greenwich's comeback. He is the younger brother of former Yale star Sean Backman, who is currently playing for the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Even though the first period was even territorially with each team generating 10 shots, St. Joseph (5-3) built a 3-0 lead.

After Christian Keator, who had two goals and two assists, opened the scoring, the Cadets hurt the Cardinals with their special teams.

John Ferguson scored a shorthanded goal and Troy Deering added a power-play tally to give St. Joseph its three-goal lead after the first period.

Keator tallied his second goal of the night 1:24 into the middle period, and the rout appeared to be on.

But freshman Decker Curran's goal on a breakaway started the comeback at 3:12.  Backman and Paul Macken then scored less than a minute apart to bring Greenwich within 4-3 with seven minutes left in the second period.

St. Joseph's Andrew Gore scored 12 seconds later to slow the Cardinals' momentum, but Backman found the back of the net twice in the first 5:13 of the third period to tie the game at 5-5.

Julian also had a four-point night for the Cadets with a goal and three assists.
