"The force of the collision threw the woman onto the road where she struck her head suffering an additional injury. She then slid into the oncoming lane of traffic, but fortunately was not struck by any other vehicles," Sgt. John Slusarz, head of the GPD traffic section said in the statement. "A preliminary investigation has revealed that there were no crosswalks in the area of the collision."

The victim was admitted to the Stamford Hospital Care Unit for treatment of her injuries. Police have not released her name pending notification of her family members. (And a Stamford Hospital spokesman said he cannot provide information on her condition without her name.)

The bus was carrying students from a local private school. The school was contacted and arranged for the care of the students and their transportation from the scene of the scene of the crash. Neither the bus driver nor any of the students were injured. Due to the ages of the students their identities and the identity of their school is not being released.

Iris Oliveira, manager of Tulips of Greenwich, the flower shop located directly across the traffic circle, said he was unaware of the accident until he saw the traffic circle "flooded with police cars and ambulances." He added, "We couldn't see anything. Oh my God there were so many cars."

Oliveira said it is the first time a pedestrian has been struck in the busy intersection that also connects with Dearfield Road in the two years he has worked in the flower shop at 91 Lake Ave.

"I feel so badly. I hope she'll be okay," Oliveira added.

Original story, Monday, Sept. 24:

A pedestrian was severely injured when they were struck by a small school bus Monday afternoon near the intersection of Glenville Road and Lake Avenue near the entrance to the private Rock Ridge neighborhood.

According to a voicemail press release from Greenwich Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray, "a small, school bus, a 15-passenger type school bus struck a pedestrian who was injured quite severely and transported to Stamford (Hospital Emergency Room)." He said the female pedestrian "was an adult, not a child."

Gray said there were 5 children—who were either middle or high school aged—on the bus at the time of the incident and none were "physically harmed" in the incident. The accident—around 3:30 p.m., Sept. 24—prompted the closure of the road and of Brookside Drive, for an extended period of time during the accident investigation, causing some delays for commuters, Gray said.

Gray also said more information would be released by Sgt. John Slusarz, head of the department's traffic section, late Tuesday morning "hopefully with the names and some of the mechanics of what transpired." Gray would not identify the bus operating company.

Gray said it did not appear mechanical issues with the bus caused the accident. "It's looking like the pedestrian may be at fault ... there hasn't been a determination on whether any charges will be filed," Gray added.
