Store Employee Faces Charge He Stole $65K in Clothing

According to Greenwich police, the employee worked in 'asset protection.'

 

A man who Greenwich Police say was employed by Saks Fifth Avenue "in an asset protection function" has been arrested on charges he stole more than $65,000 in merchandise from the high-end women's clothing store.

Mario A. Chavez, 30, of 51 Clermont St., Port Chester, NY, surrendered Feb. 13 to Greenwich Police who obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degree larceny and organized retail theft.

According to a police report, an investigation began November 2012 after Saks Fifth Avenue "received information he may be responsible for theft." Police spokesman Lt. John Brown said more than $65,000 in apparel including shoes, purses and coats were reported missing. He said $40,000 worth of the items have been recovered.

Details on how the thefts were discovered were not available.

Chavez posted a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Feb. 20 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
