Truck Crash Causes Major Gas Leak, Road Closures

Mid-day traffic disrupted in central Greenwich.

 

A natural gas leak caused when a truck crashed into the at Field Point Road Wednesday afternoon shut down traffic in central Greenwich for nearly 2 hours.

According to spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray, the scene unfolded shortly after 1 p.m. when the unidentified truck rammed into the building, shearing off a gas meter outside the brick structure.

'Nobody was hurt, however, the gas meter was dislodged causing what would become a significant gas leakage," Gray said.

"It was reported to police that the odor of natural gas be smelled as far away as West Putnam Avenue," Gray said. Police Department and the GFD (), responded ... we shut down the area to all vehicular traffic as well Metro-North train traffic and evacuated several of the buildings immediately adjacent to Connecticut L&P building.

West Putnam Avenue is about a half-mile from the accident scene.

Crews from responded in less than 10 minutes to shut off the gas, according to Gray.

"Due to potential for explosion, gas company went to each building that was evacuated and metered it and determined it was safe for people to return," Gray said.

Roads and adjacent buildings were reopened, and train traffic back to normal by 3 p.m., Gray said.

Information on the truck driver and whether charges would be lodged, was not immediately available.
