Aquatics at Greenwich High School
Do you find it a delight to be walking around with your hair wet in the middle of the day during the cold month of December? Do you mind jumping in a pool while you see snow out the window? The Board of Education sure doesn't mind these problems, if they did, then we wouldn't have the tormenting class. Besides the fact that the pool is filled to the brim with bromine, the locker room is not safe. People's personal items get stolen all the time. A peer in my class put her blackberry on the bench, turned around for a second and looked back and it was gone. My sneakers also got stolen right out of my locker. It was very disappointing.
There are also positive things about aquatics, such as everyone has the chance to learn how to swim. The teachers are very nice; the under privileged teens are given a swim cap and other swim accessories that are needed to let that person swim to their full potential; this is very fair.
Do you think Greenwich High School should continue to make kids take aquatics for one semester during their freshmen year?

Interesting post. I took Aquatics at 7:30 a.m. during the winter. It definitely wasn't a highlight of my day. Many of my friends didn't particularly enjoy the pool either. Some got doctor's notes to get them out of it. But I do think that living in a shoreline community, it is as important to know how to swim because you never know when you might find yourself in the water. I belonged to a swim club and my parents got me swim lessons. Not everyone can have them and the swim classes do a great job of making sure everyone is comfortable in the water -- just maybe not at 7:30 before Biology. -Class of '09

I agree with Jay- it's important for everyone to learn to swim. That being said, maybe the middle of the school day isn't the best time to do so. I hated walking around with wet hair all day, especially when it meant walking home from school in freezing weather with wet hair. Aquatics is a special kind of high school misery.

If the point of Aquatics at GHS is to learn to swim, then it failed. Freshman year, going into that class, I didn't know how to swim. I passed with a "C," by showing up, bringing a bathing suit, and kicking and splashing til I reached the other side of the pool. The teacher was very nice, and I was trying. But, to this day, I don't really know how to swim.

GHS Freshman may get swim requirement waved if BoE PE Coordinator Coleen Morey's suggestion is adopted - option of kayaking or snorkeling instead...

The PE report and recommendations are on the consent agenda for Thursday evening's Board of Education meeting (1/19) at Western Middle School 7:00 pm. There is an opportunity for the public to comment.
