Stoners Beware: We Know Your Secret

I was in class one day when we were reviewing homework and one of my classmates began to laugh obnoxiously. All the students knew this was normal behavior for this student.

My teacher walked over and asked, "Could you please stop smoking weed before my class?"

The whole class went silent. We realized the teacher knew all along what we had known for years. Then, in unison the whole class gasped. "Oh, Snap!" everyone said.

The student scoffed with shock and embarrassment because although they didn't try to hide the fact of being a stoner, they didn't expect that anyone would call them out on it.

And yet students come into class reeking all the time. Is it really that hard to wait until 2:15?

There's a Time and Place for Everything
While we are teenagers and we are expected to experiment in our young lives, that is not an excuse to come to class completely under the influence. There is a difference between going to a party with your friends and trying something new, versus, for example, walking into history class high.

I know for a fact that no one is perfect, and that everyone has their own way to chill out. But chilling out shouldn't be a 24-hour activity, especially if you want to get into college and ensure yourself a good future. If people truly desire to smoke, that is their choice, but they shouldn't allow it to get in the way of their education. People should have their priorities straight.

If only students would see that there are better things to do with their time, and their MONEY, than using and buying illegal substances. From my day to day observations at Greenwich High School, there is an overwhelming percentage of students who smoke marijuana either on a daily or occasional basis.

"I was so smacked last night"
This is a statement I hear on any given day, referring to a crazy night of which a person has no recollection of. It seems the more you smoke, the more friends you suddenly have. But also the more you smoke, the higher your chances of getting caught.

I've even seen friends who've been caught smoking pot be congratulated by other students – not only for doing it, but for getting caught. Maybe because it makes them seem more hard core.

Teens quote the words to this Wiz Khalifa rap all the time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa5B22KAkEk

To the people who don't smoke though, stoners look like complete fools. We all know that a drug-sniffing dog is going to come to GHS any day now. That better be the one day people forget your stash at home.

Dear Allyha,
As a psychotherapist, I have treated too many adolescents who smoke marijuana, drink, snort cocaine, use their parents' prescription medications and then suffer a serious decline in academic and social functioning. I applaud your honesty in talking about this epidemic amongst your peers and applaud your high degree of self awareness.
Sincerely,
Glenn Wolff, LCSW
