For the first time in recent memory the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee will field a full slate of candidates challenging incumbent Republicans.
Races for Greenwich's delegation in Hartford will be just that — a race. For the first time in recent memory, residents will have a choice in the November election as the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee will field four candidates to challenge the dominating Republican delegation. DTC Chair Frank Farricker said Tuesday, "The really important thing is that for the first time we are running candidates for every position and I think that redistricting has leveled the playing field and that will be a good thing for us." And Farricker ruled out any run for himself. Earlier this year, he said he was considering a run for the 150th District House seat held by Republican Lile Gibbons who is retiring. "I am in the middle of buying a new business…

Blankley hopes to unseat the 6-term Republican in the 149th District covering Greenwich, Stamford.
John Blankley, the Greenwich Democrat who lost the First Selectman's race last November by a nearly 3 to 1 margin, announced Tuesday that he "intends to run as the Democratic candidate for District 149 in the Connecticut State House of Representatives." Blankley will be facing incumbent 6-term Livvy Floren, the Republican who has been representing the district that includes North Greenwich and parts of Stamford. Blankley, a Greenwich businessman, has been active in local politics, having served on the board of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee and the Representative Town Meeting “The residents of Greenwich and Stamford are very important to the State of Connecticut,” Blankley said in a prepared statement. “Our neighbors and friends …

US Senate hopeful and Greenwich resident says she is severing ties with the party because Gov. Dannel Malloy and Rep. Chris Murphy are "lying to the people to pander to the ultra conservative branch of the Jewish community."
US Senate hopeful and Greenwich author Lee Whitnum announced today that she is leaving the Connecticut Democratic Party but will continue to run for retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman's seat in the upcoming November election on a yet-to-be determined ticket. In an emailed statement, Whitnum said she was severing ties with the party because Democrats Gov. Dannel Malloy and Rep. Chris Murphy are "lying to the people to pander to the ultra conservative branch of the Jewish community." "I've had enough, I'm leaving the Connecticut Democratic Party," Whitnum said. "I can't be in a party where the two of the highest representative in the party namely Governor Malloy and Congressman Murphy lie to the people about the real reason why we went to the Iraq …

Richard Weiland is running to get the GOP nomination to challenge Congressman Jim Himes this November.
A veteran of the Air Force who’s lived in Redding for over 35 years is seeking to unseat Congressman Jim Himes (D-4th) this fall. But he’s first got to grab the Republican nomination. Dick Wieland—a self-proclaimed “retired businessman, but not a retired citizen”— said he’s got administrative experience necessary to enact change in Washington. “I have a military, professional, business and citizen [experience] that has demonstrated sound judgment, [as well as] good decision-making aspects in all these fields,” Wieland told Patch. “I have a demonstrated ability to outline a plan, articulate the details and achieve supporter buy-in—otherwise known as leadership. I have the wherewithal and energy to confront Washington and make a change.” …

The Greenwich businessman and former U.S. ambassador to Ireland under President George W. Bush lost the governor's race by 6,404 votes to Dan Malloy in the 2010 election.
Greenwich businessman Tom Foley hinted in a recent interview that he might run a second time for governor of the State of Connecticut. Foley, a Republican, narrowly lost his bid for the governor's chair to former Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy, a Democrat, in the 2010 election. In a recent interview on WFSB-TV's "Face the State," Foley said Malloy and the Democratic-controlled legislature have so far failed to accelerate job growth, while at the same time rapidly increasing taxes. However he said Malloy would be too challenging to defeat should the economy improve, therefore he is waiting to see how the state does over the next year or so before making a decision whether to run in 2014. For more, check out the "Face the State" report.

The current ‘war between women’ pitting Hilary Rosen against Ann Romney is deflecting attention from the true ‘war ON women’ and distracting us from the real question—Who are we voting for?
[Editor's Note: Please keep an eye out later this week for "Patch Back," a new feature from Lisa Bigelow that will serve as response piece to certain installments of Heather's "Patch In."] The question isn’t whether Ann Romney ever ‘worked’ a day in her whole life, but: Does her husband Mitt truly give a rat’s ass about anyone—especially women—in the 99 percent? This made-up battle between working moms and stay-at-home-moms is causing people of every gender to lose focus on more important issues—namely whether politicians are advocating stripping rights from women (like reproductive health choices) or finding ways to penalize them and hold them back (withholding equal pay) or simply having a double standard when it comes to lower- vs. …

To the Editor: I was dismayed to read about Lee Whitnum’s comments during the Democratic debate on Friday night during which she said that Chris Murphy's acceptance of political contributions from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee made him a "whore" for Israel. Regardless of your stance on political contributions, this remark against Israel in no way represents the Democratic Party or my own personal beliefs. I am a firm believer that there is a fine line between the First Amendment and unprotected speech, and this remark crossed the line. While I do not know Ms. Whitnum personally, I hope that Democrats and Republicans alike know that her views are not those of the Greenwich Democratic Party at large. Selectman Drew Marzullo

"She has almost no support if any," Gov. Malloy said, according to a Greenwich Time report.
About 90 minutes before a second debate was scheduled to begin at the UConn Storrs campus, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy reportedly said Monday that US Senate hopeful and fellow Democrat Lee Whitnum should not be allowed to participate future debates for the party nomination for the seat now held by Sen. Joe Lieberman, due to controversial comments she made about her opponents during last week's debate broadcast on NBC Connecticut. During a televised debate that was broadcast Thursday, Whitnum sharply criticized Congressman Chris Murphy over his pro-Israel stance, saying, “I’m dealing with a whore here who sells his soul to AIPAC [The American Israel Public Affairs Committee], who will say anything for the job.” Whitnum also referred …

During a live televised debate, Greenwich resident Whitnum sharply criticized Congressman Chris Murphy over his pro-Israel stance, saying, “I’m dealing with a whore here who sells his soul to AIPAC, who will say anything for the job.”
US Senate hopeful and Greenwich author Lee Whitnum made some controversial comments about her opponents during a televised debate that was broadcast on NBC Connecticut Thursday. In her closing remarks, Whitnum sharply criticized current Congressman Chris Murphy over his pro-Israel stance, saying, “I’m dealing with a whore here who sells his soul to AIPAC [The American Israel Public Affairs Committee], who will say anything for the job.” Whitnum also referred to state representative William Tong as “ignorant” as she ran out of time in the live televised event. In his closing remarks, a visibly angry Murphy said although he had advocated for all the nominee hopefuls to be part of the debates, “I might think twice about that with that kind of…

In a statement, the governor’s office said the protective order is so Gov. Malloy doesn't need to respond to correspondence from Whitnum, and should not be misconstrued as a restraining order.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has reportedly filed for a protective order against fellow Democrat and US Senate hopeful Lee Whitnum, who is suing the governor for slander. According to a report in the Stamford Advocate, Whitnum, who lives in Greenwich, filed the lawsuit against Malloy in 2010, when Malloy was still mayor of Stamford. Whitnum claims Malloy damaged her reputation when he characterized comments she made during the 2008 Democratic primary between herself and now-Congressman Jim Himes about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as anti-Semitic. In a statement, the governor’s office said the civil motion filed Monday is so Malloy doesn't need to respond to correspondence from Whitnum, and should not be misconstrued as a …
