Thriving, bustling  Byram is an unincorporated village in the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, surrounded by the Byram River on one side and the Long Island Sound on the other. *It stretches South from Byram Point up to Pemberwick and Chickahominy sections of Greenwich and is the gateway to Connecticut from Westchester County. Six little Island sit out in the Byram Harbor, off the coast of Byram Park. Living in the village with all of its old-world and new-world charm, affords residents majestic river and seaside views and because of its proximity to Port Chester, every major public transportation route to New York City and Stamford is available.

But what’s most spectacular about Byram as you walk about this little village is it’s up-and-coming business district along North Water Street, Delavan Avenue and Mill Street with its dress and home designer shops, pottery and craft shops, Golf pro shop, jewelry and apparel accessories shops, delis, pizzerias, print and copy shops, restaurants, old cuts and new cuts barber shops, wine stores, car repair and lottery/smoke shops, dog groomers, tattoo shops, bait and tackle shop, just to name a few.

Every week "About Byram" will focus on the different businesses and people, starting with SECOND CHANCES Thrift and consignment shop located at 103 Mill St., just before the Mill Street bridge because the proprietor Mindy Levy Salinas was the first to agree to be interviewed.

Second Chances thrift and consignment shop is a unique store thanks to the friendly and perky owner Mindy Salinas. She has owned Second Chances since 2008 and has an array of hard to find collectible and affordable designer clothing.

Mindy’s motto is “If it’s out there I’ve got it or I know how to get it.” While I was interviewing Mindy, a gentleman, Vlad, came in looking for red cufflinks. Vlad told me, he’d lost his red cufflinks to his suit awhile back and couldn’t find any in all the other stores he visited. Then his cousin told him about Second Chances and he walked in and found them.

Soon after Vlad left a lady came into the store needing a purple camisole, which Mindy had. As Mindy proudly says, “I love all of my customers.” There was a steady stream of customers walking in and purchasing clothes, jewelry and one of a kind items. So if you get a chance stop in or if you’re looking for that hard to find item, chances are you’ll find it at Second Chances Thrift and Consignment Shop.

* Did you know that The Indians who lived in the vicinity of Byram were of the Miossehassaky tribe, one of the Siwanoy’s, a branch of the Mohegan Indians.

These tribes were preceded by a more seafaring group known as the Coastal Indians, who were wiped out by smallpox epidemics  contracted from European traders in the early 1600's, prior to actual settlement. The Indians apparently used Byram as part of their hunting ground. The nearest Indian village was across the harbor from Byram Point on Manursing Island in Rye, NY.
