NEIGHBORS has arrived!

(From neighborstv Facebook page: NEIGHBORS has arrive! Were on Public Access, Cablevision channels in the City of Yonkers, the town of Harrison and the Village of Port Chester, New York - every Thursday at 7 pm starting May 2, 2013. I’m so happy and excited  y'all that I'm full to bursting to overflowing with happiness. If I were in church (African American) I'd be like those members who are so overjoyed for the Lord that they can't sit down. They can't jump enough or high enough. Or the twirling members who stretch their hands and necks up toward the heavens and twirl. Or like that church member whose feet can't stop dancing to the Glory of it all. Yeah the last one is me because that’s how I felt when I got the news that NEIGHBORS has made it to New York State in Westchester County. Neighbor’s cast member Joan Frutkin made it happen. Right on Joan!)

I heard about this school in the Midwest that suggested that there be bullet proof shields in classes for children to use in case a former adult student who was bullied beyond belief while a child in school, returns to reap his/her revenge on the innocent by shooting up the classroom. (Somehow the word shield made me think about the Knight Chess piece, you know the Knight moves in an L-shape.) My mind’s eye saw a classroom full of children pausing to listen, then running and getting their shields ready - another school drill if you will. Then I started to  remember as a child in elementary school how we had bomb drills where we had to hid under our desk. (During those day Chess and piano were taught in school.) Or the Atomic bomb drills where we had to line up in the hall as close to the wall as possible. Then we’d walk along the wall and down the steps to the bomb shelter, in case an Atomic bomb was drop somewhere in the USA. Somehow then we knew when you attack you get attacked back. Shields in schools are the best idea ever. Don’t fight guns with guns, everybody loses.

On the internet I keep reading untruths about us “living in fear” or “Being scared for our lives”. Back in the day, I can’t remember being scared because we may be getting bombed. When that school alarm went off and we had to protect our lives - it became a natural response for us. We weren’t scared about being blown to bits we just knew there was a chance we could be. We just did as we were instructed. So as I kept reading about all this fear stuff on Facebook I didn’t/don’t understand it. Grownups taught me that North America in one form or another is always going to be under a threat of some form of attack. When did we become so comfortable to be shocked when being attack?  As my daughter jokingly said “Well mom we both can’t be at an event at the same time, somebody got to be alive to sign the check”. I laughed until I was crying, but she’s right. Protective mode it is. Not hate or revenge, defensive mode – Chess.
