Exciting new sprint triathlon added to the Navigators Stamford KIC IT Triathlon race weekend

A new sprint triathlon has been added to the Navigators Stamford KIC IT Triathlon race weekend, providing a great opportunity for beginners and seasoned triathletes alike to compete on a speedy course. The new race will take its place along with the seventh annual Olympic-distance Navigators Stamford KIC IT Triathlon on Sunday, June 22, 2014. The fourth annual Navigators Stamford KIC IT Kids Triathlon takes place the day before, on Saturday, June 21. All three triathlons will benefit Kids in Crisis.

The new USAT-sanctioned race will start with the 0.8k (0.5 mile) swim at Cummings Beach in Stamford. It will follow the same (but shorter) pattern of the Olympic Triathlon swim. The 22k (13.9 mile) bike course will feature the beauty of backcountry Stamford along with the excitement of downtown. And the 5.1k (3.2 mile) run will be a speedy jaunt throughout the city. “Adding the sprint distance provides opportunities for more athletes to experience the challenge and fun of racing as well as to help raise awareness and funds for Kids in Crisis,” said Jeff Palma, Navigators Stamford KIC IT Committee member, Kids in Crisis Board member, and Chief Market Strategist at GE Asset Management.

Racers, their families, and the public are all invited to the free Family Festival after the Sunday races, which will take place at Mill River Park in downtown Stamford. The annual Festival was recently voted by endurance industry leader Active.com as a “Top Killer Post-Race Party.”

The Navigators Stamford KIC IT Triathlon and Navigators Stamford KIC IT Kids Triathlon have grown into an outstanding athletic weekend, attracting competitors from across the country, while maintaining a special focus on offering a fun family experience. The entire weekend benefits Kids in Crisis (www.kidsincrisis.org), Connecticut’s only free, round-the-clock agency providing emergency shelter, crisis counseling and community educational programs for children of all ages and families dealing with a wide range of crises – domestic violence, mental health and family problems, substance abuse, economic difficulties and more. Since its founding in 1978, Kids in Crisis has helped more than 118,000 Connecticut children and families; last year, more than 6,000 children and families received assistance from the organization.
