Flood Watch: Heavy Rains, Storms Could Cause Shoreline Flooding

A mix of heavy rains and thunderstorms could result in "significant" flooding in areas throughout the shoreline region starting late Friday afternoon and into early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood watch for southern Connecticut and southeast New York. The NWS says the heaviest rain is expected to coincide with high tide in western Long Island Sound tonight "which could exacerbate flooding along ... southern Fairfield County."

High tide is forecast to occur between midnight and 3 a.m. Saturay, with tides running about 1 foot above the astronomical levels, according to the weather service.

The good news is that once the rains move out early Saturday morning, the rest of the weekend looks to be a pleasant one weather wise here along the shoreline with only a slight chance of rain and high temperatures expected to reach the low 70s.

• Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then showers likely. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 56. Southeast wind 5 to 14 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
• Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. West wind 5 to 9 mph.
• Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48. Northwest wind around 8 mph.
• Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. North wind 7 to 10 mph.
• Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48.
• Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.
• Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 51.
• Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 69.
• Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51.
