Getting Fresh at the Old Greenwich Farmers Market

Every Wednesday afternoon there's a veritable cornucopia of fresh produce and baked goods in the parking lot of the Presbyterian Church of Old Greenwich.

The brainchild of four Old Greenwich families who wanted farm fresh alternatives to the food available in local groceries, the Old Greenwich Farmers Market was born three years ago.

"We have a permanent group of nine farmers and we rotate through another dozen vendors and producers who are not growers," said Amy Burke, who with with Dana Evans, co-manages the market that's at the church at 38 West End Ave. each Wednesday afternoon.

"We have producers of jams, jellies, soaps, pies, breads, plants" Burke said. Among the regular vendors and producers are the SoNo Baking Co. and Wave Hill Breads. Having mid-week market also provides residents the opportunity to keep stocked up on produce, rather than rely upon the Arch Street farmers market that's open on Saturdays, Burke said.

The market also is a venue for local entertainment and businessmen. Last Wednesday popular caterer and cookbook author Debra Ponzek of Aux Delices was selling and signing copies of her latest book, The Dinnertime Survival Cookbook.

Last Wednesday, shoppers carried bags laden with pumpkins, lettuces, tomatoes, beans, squashes, spinach, apples and what is probably the last of this season's corn, as visitors jockeyed for parking spaces in the afternoon sun.

Madeline and Heather Wise visited the weekly market after school where last week the pair picked up a plump pumpkin and some fresh Italian green beans from farmer Joe Smith of Smith's Acres. "We come together after school every week. We love coming here—they have great stuff," said Madeline Wise.

The market is open from 3 to 6 p.m. each Wednesday, until Oct. 30 when with the waning afternoon daylight, the hours will change to 2 to 5 p.m., Evans said. The market will be open until Nov. 20.
