Greenwich Detour: John Street Bridge Replacement to Begin

Drivers in backcountry Greenwich will have a major detour as the John Street bridge replacement starts next week.

For backcountry Greenwich residents, their trip around town is going to take quite a bit longer.

Starting June 17, work will begin on replacing the John Street bridge—the narrow two-lane bridge over the East Byram River—between Riversville and Round Hill roads. Located at the bottom of a hill and on a curve, the bridge sits just about a foot or so above the river, according to Frank Petise, senior civil engineer in the Greenwich Department of Public Works.

Once the preparation work is completed, the road will be closed at the bridge site from June 25 through Sept. 27, Petise said.

The $709,216 project will involve raising the height of the bridge and given the grade of the road, about 500 feet of the roadbed will need to be raised and repaved, Petise said. The construction contract was awarded to A. Vitti Excavators of Stamford.

Here's the detour route:
For traffic wanting to travel eastbound on John Street will need to head south on Riversville Road to North Porchuck Road, then east to West Old Mill Road, and east to Round Hill Road.

For westbound traffic, head south on Round Hill Road to West Old Mill Road, then west to North Porchuck Road and west to Riversville Road.
