Greenwich Department of Public Works crews are busy collecting leaves and in some instances, Hurricane Sandy debris as well. Even though the official town stand is that storm debris won't be collected with the leaves, in one western Greenwich neighborhood where piles of tree limbs and branches dotted the street along with piles of leaves that narrowed traffic to one lane, DPW crews picked up both. (Please see video.)

Because of the hurricane and freak late October snowfall, crews will collect leaves only once this year.

The town is asking residents to rake leaves only into piles at the shoulder of the road, and to avoid raking leaves onto the pavement, sidewalks, catch basin grates and open channels, which cause drainage and flooding problems during periods of rain. As an alternative, residents may choose to place leaves in biodegradable paper bags and place them for collection at the curb. Plastic bags filled with leaves won't be collected.

Leaf collection will be conducted in accordance to numeric section scheduling by DPW. The current collection schedule is available by calling the round-the-clock Leaf Collection Hotline Number: (203) 618-7698.

This week, the town is collecting in the Cos Cob, North Mianus, Byram, Old Greenwich, Riverside and central Greenwich, north of Route 1.
