Greenwich Merchants: Sales Are Brisk At Sidewalk Sales Days

The heat and humidity seem to have abated enough for hordes of shoppers to invade downtown Greenwich for the annual sidewalk sales days.

Not that the downtown district isn't usually teeming with shoppers, Friday was a day where walking, driving and yes, finding a parking spot required more patience than usual.

For merchants that was a good thing.

Shoes 'N' More manager Ann Spallone said sales "are better than last year." Holding colorful samples of JPK handbags beneath the canopy in front the store, she called out to shoppers, "C'mon ladies, buy the JPK bag for $89. You'll find this same bag at other shops for $200."

Kate Spade store manager Kristina Stewart also said sales were brisk during the second day of the four-day event that ends July 14.

"It's been amazing. Cosmetic bags, the cross-body bags, all of our leather (products) are selling well," Stewart said. By early afternoon, much of the reduced-price merchandise was sold.

"We're almost sold out of our wallets," Stewart added.

Caren Forbes who owns Caren Forbes in New Canaan is one of many out- of-town merchants who rented tents from the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, which organized the annual event that includes more than 100 participating store and restaurants.

Forbes said sales of hand-embroidered tunics for $15 each were brisk as were her $8 scarves. She's located outside the Greenwich Senior/Art Center.
