Greenwich Sets The Limit For Speed

Drivers who like to zip through the scenic shortcut on Hemlock Drive--between Edgewood and Valley drives--you'll have to put the flaps down.

The Greenwich Board of Selectmen unanimously approved setting a 25 mph speed limit on Hemlock, according to Mike Rosen, executive assistant to the First Selectman. Currently, there isn't any posted speed limit on the .38-mile stretch of road.

Establishing the speed limit on the narrow two-lane road came at the request of residents--a request that was reviewed and recommended by the traffic division of the Department of Public Works.

Residents were concerned about the traffic from nearby car dealerships and customers who use the road--that does not have sidewalks--for test drives, according to documents filed with the selectmen.

Located at Edgewood and West Putnam Avenue are dealerships for Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen.

Traffic Operations Coordinator Melissa Evans said the speed limit also must be approved by the State Traffic Administration which should take four to six weeks. The speed limit signs should be posted by mid-summer, according to Evans.
