Hot Dog! Wendy's Weenies Serving Up Redhots in Greenwich

Those interested in getting out of the office and stretching their legs during the lunch hour have the opportunity now to grab a dog if they're hitting up Greenwich Commons.

Park strollers will find Wendy Mangano serving up dogs at Wendy's Weenies, a little food truck parked on the lot right at the center of town.

"February was slow because of the weather. But now that it's getting nice out, things are really picking up," Mangano said. "I love doing this, meeting new people."

Mangano, who lives on Stamford and whose family used to operate a minimart near the Stamford Government Center, said she would sit with her grandmother, who also operated a food truck, and eat all the meatballs. It's where she found her passions for cooking and serving the public.

But she didn't always work with food. She was a realtor working in a doctor's office before a friend's boyfriend put the truck on the market. When she heard he was looking to get rid of it-and the Greenwich Avenue spot it occupied at the Commons-she jumped at the chance.

"I came here and sat with him for two weeks to see how business was. Then I bought the truck for myself as a birthday present," Mangano said. "I drive here everyday from Stamford. It's a 1980s truck, so there's no power-steering. Initially I was driving down the Merritt [Parkway] doing 40 with people honking at me."

She said she goes through a lot of dogs and the ever-popular red hots, but that the grilled chicken with lettuce, tomato and dressing has really taken off as a fan favorite.

Mangano said she's got lots of extra appearances coming up, including attending the Greenwich town party and adopt-a-dog day, and museum appearances on May 18 and 19 at the Bruce Museum.
