Sept. 11 Ceremony to Include Memorials of Recent Terror Attacks

The Greenwich September 11th Remembrance Committee and the Greenwich American Legion Post 29 will host the 12th annual event marking the terrorist attacks will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11th in front of the Greenwich Town Hall.

The committee announced details of the 40-minute ceremony on Friday. The ceremony which include music and prayers, the Greenwich Fire Department, Police Department, and GEMS honor guards performing a special tribute and salute, will begin at 6:30 p.m., according to Christopher Hughes, the event organizer and former United States Marine.

The purpose of this event is to honor the memory of the Greenwich residents and all those killed on this day in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and on Flight 93.  The event will include music, wreath and flower presentations, a 21-gun salute, and tribute to first responders.

This year’s event—which is open to the public—will continue a tradition of candle lighting by the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross, Hughes said. “We will also focus on the three terrorist attacks since 2001, at Fort Hood, the consulate in Benghazi, and the Boston Marathon bombing. It is important that we recognize the real threats that continue to exist in the world today,” Hughes said.

There were 26 people who either lived or grew up in Greenwich who were killed in the Sept 11, 2001 attacks. There is a memorial to them on Great Captain Island off Greenwich's coastline. The bronze plaque on a rock on the southern edge of the island overlooks the New York City skyline.
