Water Main Repair on Riversville Road 'Going Well'

Aquarion Water Co. official says project is still about a week head of schedule and should be completed before the end of September.

The replacement of about 500 feet of 8-inch water main on Riversville Road — which had burst twice, once in July and again in early August — is "going well," Aquarion Water Co. Public Relations Officer Bruce Silverstone said in an interview Tuesday.

"The work is progressing smoothly," Silverstone said. "We are still about a week ahead of schedule and we expect to wrap the project up early."

Silverstone said crews from Aquarion subcontractor Penna Construction are more than halfway finished with laying the new span of water main, which runs along the southbound side of the road, from the intersection of Riversville and Glenville roads to near the driveway of Glenville School.

Silverstone said the work is being carried out in "least disruptive way possible." He said the water company scheduled to work to begin just after the morning rush hour ends, and to end just before the evening rush hour starts.

In addition "we had two nights where we had a crew work though the night until 5 a.m.," in order to help expedite the project, he said.

Al Scalisi, who owns Glenville Hardware and Glenville Service Center and Mini Mart, on opposite corners at the end of Riversville Road, said although he temporarily lost several on-the-street parking spaces in front of the hardware store, "business has really been affected all that much," at either location. He said he has parking at the rear of the hardware store and access/egress from the gas station wasn't affected.

"I've been impressed with how the police and contstruction vreews oue there have been keeping the traffic moving along," Scalisi said, although he ackowledged that some motorists may have changed their commutes and found ways around the construction.
