What's Open, What's Closed For New Year's Holiday Weekend & Week

 

Monday, New Year's Eve

OPEN Monday, Dec. 31:

• Greenwich town government—regular business hours unitl 4 p.m.

• Greenwich Library including Byram Shubert and Cos Cob branches, Perrot Memorial Library—until 5 p.m. and Stamford's Ferguson Library (until 5 p.m.)

• Post offices

• U.S. Government offices

• Connecticut state offices (see PDF of 2012 state holiday schedule attached to this article), except for the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, which is normally closed on Monday.

• Banks

• New York Stock Exchange

• Greenwich YMCA open 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk (open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

 

CLOSED Monday:

• Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (not normally open on Mondays)

• Greenwich Public Schools closed through Jan. 1, classes resume Jan. 2.

• reopening Jan. 2.

 

BUS, TRAIN SERVICE on Monday:

• CT Transit, Stamford and Greenwich bus service, "local routes & the I-BUS Express will operate on a regular schedule, with reduced Commuter Connection service on Monday, December 31, 2012 (New Year's Eve)."

• Norwalk Transit bus service

• Metro-North (see "Metro-North" section, below)

New Year's Day

The following are CLOSED New Year's Day:

• Greenwich Town Hall.

• Greenwich Public Schools, classes restart Jan. 2.

• Greenwich Library, Byram Shubert, Cos Cob and Perrot Memorial libraries, and Stamford's Ferguson Library)

• Post offices

• U.S. government offices

• Connecticut Department of Motor vehicles and AAA offices

• Banks have the option of staying open or closed — in practice, all or nearly all are closed on New Year's Day (and this is one of the four holidays that even TD Bank is normally closed)

• New York Stock Exchange

OPEN New Year's Day:

• Greenwich YMCA open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Dunkin Donuts — Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

• Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk

BUS SERVICE  on New Year's Day:

• CT Transit, Stamford and Greenwich bus service, "will operate on a Sunday schedule on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 (New Year's Day)."

• Norwalk Transit—no bus service in Norwalk, and the office is closed

Metro-North Service

The following information is from the Metro-North website:

• Monday, Dec. 31: "[T]o make sure you arrive wherever you need to be to ring in 2013, we will provide a Saturday schedule with extra service in the AM and PM peak periods, as well as additional inbound trains in the late afternoon/early evening, and our traditional post-midnight late night/early morning service to get you home safely.
