Diamond Hill United Methodist Church Chili Cookoff to Benefit Neighbor to Neighbor

The Annual Cos Cob Chili Cook Off is taking place on Saturday October 13th, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Diamond Hill United Methodist Church, 521 E. Putnam Ave., Cos Cob.

The charge is $5 per person to sample and cast your vote for the best chili served up with sides and beverages. The event is sponsored and hosted by Diamond Hill and co-sponsored by Griffith E. Harris Insurance. All proceeds will benefit Neighbor to Neighbor in Greenwich. TOGETHER WE CAN FEED OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED!

Neighbor to Neighbor improves lives by providing for the exchange of food, clothing and basic living essentials in an atmosphere of kindness and respect. Founded in 1975, Neighbor is a volunteer-based non-profit organization, operating in the basement annex of Christ Church of Greenwich. We provide food, clothing and small household items to clients who are referred by social service agencies, religious organizations and the public school system.

Every year, Neighbor to Neighbor provides 500 Greenwich families with 300,000 meals and 2,300 adults and children from Greenwich, Port Chester and Stamford with 14,000 bags of clothing. Neighbor to Neighbor does not charge fees; food and clothing is provided free of charge to eligible clients. Client eligibility is determined by referring agencies, with clients earning no more than 200% of the federal poverty level. Since the start of the economic downturn in 2008, we have experienced a 50% increase in demand.

A family receives enough food for three meals a day for three days at each weekly visit. We provide 300,000 nutritionally-balanced meals per year – that’s 21,000 pounds of lean meat, 4,600 gallons of low-fat shelf-stable milk, 150,000 cans of food, 9,000 loaves of whole wheat bread and 600 cases of produce. Donated funds purchase 60% of the food we provide. The rest comes from food drives and individual donation.

Our clients include senior citizens, children, the “working poor”, those with physical and mental disabilities, the newly unemployed, single parent households and more. Sadly, more than half of our clients are children, numbering 624 and up 9.3% this year. All of our clients are referred from Greenwich social service agencies, religious organizations and the public school system.
