Teams will design and build sculptures made entirely from canned foods. The ‘canstructions’ will be judged on best meal, best use of labels, structural ingenuity, judges’ favorite and people’s choice.  The structures will range in size from 4’x4’x4’ tall to 10’x10’x8’ tall. After the event, all the much needed cans of food will be donated to Neighbor’s food pantry.

Local architectural firms and youth groups have signed on to build sculptures including: Joeb Moore + Partners Architects; Haverson Architecture; Hilton-VanderHorn Architects; Granoff Architects; Robert A. Cardello Architects; Laura Kaehler Architects and Riverside Girl Scouts, Troop 50527; First Presbyterian Church; and Wanda Kopec Architects, Paco Asencio Woodworking, Hall’s Edge Inc. and Greenwich Boy Scouts, Troop 10.  Rich Granoff of Granoff Architects said, “The Granoff Architects team is excited to be a part of the first Greenwich Canstruction® and to help Neighbor to Neighbor in their mission to feed and clothe those in need in our area.”

“Canstruction® is the perfect fit with Neighbor to Neighbor’s mission to feed and clothe the neediest families in our community. Each year, Neighbor provides 500 Greenwich families with 300,000 meals and 2,300 area adults and children with 14,000 bags of clothing. We are thrilled to have these great teams as part of our inaugural event,” said Marjorie Black and Denise Dreskin, Event Co-chairs, who with their committee anticipate a wonderful event on behalf of Neighbor to Neighbor. “This will be a marvelous opportunity for the community to support Neighbor to Neighbor.”

Canstruction® was first held in New York City in 1992 and since then has contributed 17.5 million pounds of food worldwide. It was the brainchild of Cheri Melillo, a member of the Society of Design Administration (SDA), under whose auspices the competition is held.
