Author Lee Woodruff Coming to Darien

The June 6 event will raise money for Family Centers' critical illness and bereavement programs.

As the communications director for Family Centers -- one of the oldest and most-repected human services organizations in Fairfield County -- I'm privledged to work with some amazing people who do incredible things every day.  Whether they're laying the foundation for a child's educational future, giving families professional, much-needed support during a crisis, keeping seniors engaged in the communities or providing the tools to enable folks to live more independently, our staff truly makes a difference in the lives of the 15,000 people Family Centers serves each year.

And as the agency's PR guy, I get to tell the community about all the good work going on here and share the many success stories of our clients. Good gig, indeed!

Another perk of my job is that I have the opporunity to work on some pretty cool special events to support the agency. One such event is the Center for HOPE Luncheon, an annual affair that benefits Family Centers' critical illness and bereavement programs — the Center for HOPE and The Den for Grieving Kids.

After years of coupling the luncheon with a fashion show, we recently decided to switch gears and feature a speaker that embodies the spirit of these two programs. We kicked off this new format in 2009 with Elizabeth Edwards, and followed it up in 2010 with best-selling author Anna Quindlen.

This year, we have another renowned author on board with an incredibly inspirational and personal story to share. On June 6 at the Country Club of Darien, Lee Woodruff will talk about how she managed to keep her family together after her husband, ABC news correspondent Bob Woodruff, was critically injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq.
