A Messy Mix of Snow, Ice, and Rain This Afternoon! Temps Warm to 60 by Wednesday!

Snowy and Icy Later Today!

Good Morning,

Find out what's happening in Greenwichwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

As a ridge of high pressure begins to retreat from the Northeast and mid Atlantic states this morning, this will be paving the way for some precipitation to get started across the Tri-State Area... For some western suburbs, especially in Morris, Warren and Sussex counties in New Jersey, the precipitation may arrive by 7:30 or 8 o'clock... For the City and most adjacent suburbs it will get started near the tail end of the morning rush, and across much of Long Island and in Connecticut, some places won't get any precipitation until lunchtime -- or even early this afternoon... The 'slow progression' to the east of snow and ice which is showing up on the regional radar this morning can be mostly attributed to some rather dry air located near the surface, which is hanging tough in areas east of the Appalachian Mountains... Even so, we must WATCH THE RADAR IMAGES VERY CLOSELY, because as a warm front continues to make its push into the Eastern Region, there can always be a little precipitation that manages to reach the ground prior to 8 a.m. -- even if the vast majority of it starts after 9 or 10 o'clock...

Temperatures in the 20s to near 30 as of this writing are expected to slowly climb today, and most will wind up in the mid 30s this afternoon... The exception will be in many of those areas located north and west of I-287, where pockets of some very shallow colder air will cause any rain this afternoon to freeze on some surfaces... Nothing could be worse than an "icy glaze", especially on some roads, streets and sidewalks that look like (and probably have) been treated... So, there are winter weather advisories out for some of the City's distant northern suburbs that will be in effect until 1 a.m. (Rockland, Putnam and Orange counties)... In most of northeastern New Jersey, where the temperatures should be in the mid-30s this afternoon and will continue to climb this evening, those advisories as of this writing are in effect until 6 p.m.

With temperatures slowly rising late tonight, most places will have some additional rain, drizzle and fog... There can still be some slick spots in many northern and western suburbs, but the temperature in the City by early tomorrow morning will probably be within a couple of degrees of 40... Despite plenty of clouds tomorrow, the temperature will at least approach 50 (but, in many cases, it will fall short), and a brief shower will occur in some places... The massive thaw that we're anticipating will feature even milder weather on Wednesday, when the temperature will be close to 60... Coastal areas, especially those south-facing shores, because of their close proximity to some late Wednesday afternoon or early on Wednesday night... Therefore, we're expecting a soaking cold water... There is going to be a strong cold front that will be approaching the Eastern Seaboard rain to occur later on Wednesday and early Wednesday night... And, there could even be a THUNDERSTORM in some places before colder air starts to press into the region on Thursday...

Even though colder air will be invading the region Thursday, Thursday night and Friday -- the air mass should not be as cold as the one that we dealt with LAST WEEK... Temperatures should be mostly in the lower or middle 30s late this week, and that chilly air will remain intact heading into next weekend...

Have a good day!!!
