A large winter storm that brought heavy snow and blizzard conditions from Iowa to Wisconsin
(near 1.5 feet in Madison, WI) and severe weather, with damaging winds and even a tornado to the
Southeast will move toward eastern Canada today. Deep low pressure (28.94") center will move
from near Detroit this morning to Lake Ontario this evening. A cold front extending from the low
will cross the metro region at daybreak. Heavy showers and perhaps a thunderstorm will
accompany the passage of the front. The rain will end in the western suburbs around 8 am, the city
9 am and clear eastern long island by noon. Rain totals will average from 0.75-1.5" across the
region. A brief period of damaging winds, with gusts of 45 to perhaps 60 mph will accompany the
passage of the showers. Temps will fall from the low and mid 50s early this morning into the 40s
by afternoon.
Behind the front, winds will briefly subside, before increasing again later this afternoon, tonight
and tomorrow.
BIG NEWS ITEMS:
- Brief period of strong winds will occur early this morning. Locally at the coast winds could reach
near 60mph which may yield power outages and downed tree limbs.
- Breezy and chilly later today, tonight and through Saturday night (winds sustained 15-25 with
gusts to 40-45). A few fitful flurries will fly through the air and perhaps a brief heavier squall or two
over the NW suburbs where a coating could occur tonight into tomorrow.
- Mainly tranquil, cool conditions for Sunday into Monday
- Two separate storms will impact the region next week. The timing of the first storm (the weather
of the two) is a little uncertain … nevertheless clouds should increase later on Monday with precip
expected from later Monday night into at least the first half of Tuesday. The low center will pass
near the city which will probably bring rain showers to the city with some snow over the interior.
Total liquid will likely range from 0.20-0.60".
- After a brief drier period another, likely more significant storm will occur on Wednesday into
Thursday. Mainly rain will probably occur with this storm along the coast and in the city, though
some mixing with snow is expected. More snow over the interior with a good chance for snow to
accumulate.
