Coastal Flood Watches and Warnings, 6-12" Snow Possible in Eastern CT!

The much anticipated storm system comes today, and while it still looks the worst of the storm will be to our south, we are not going to manage to totally avoid winter weather over the next 48 hours.

Precipitation will begin this morning, likely around the end of or after the morning commute. While it will be cutting it close it is expected that in general temperatures will not be favorable for accumulating snow, however it will likely mix in at times, especially further upstate where colder air will be in place.

At some point overnight tonight temperatures will reach levels acceptable for accumulation, at the same time moisture will be on the rise, especially in the mid and upper levels, and it looks like a quick 1-3 inches of snow will be possible overnight. Still temperatures the past few days in the 40s and air temperatures overnight just getting to the freezing mark in the city, it is going to be difficult to get snow to stick and there is still the very real possibility to go without accumulations overnight, at least on roadways.

On Thursday afternoon a piece of energy will eject out of a large upper level low in Canada and move southeast towards the storm system impacting the region Wednesday. This will work to pull a secondary batch of moisture into the region and work with somewhat colder air in place across the region to bring for another 1-3 inches. Again however boundary temperatures, despite being somewhat move favorable, will still be marginal and again a decent amount of moisture could be lost to melting.

On Friday the trough axis will have pushed well offshore and heights will be rising, and as a result activity should quickly taper off on Friday, although an additional coating to an inch will be possible in the morning.

Our wintery suffering will be be repaid with a beautiful weekend, considering how poor the past month or two have treated us. Temperatures will approach or exceed 50 both days. Early next week the next storm system will approach the region, but tracking as far north as the models currently portrait the storm will largely be rain.
