Snow for the Evening Commute & A Very Cold Weekend Ahead!

Cold Through the Weekend!

Good Morning,

Cold air that has been impacting the region for three days isn't about to loosen its grip just yet, and most of the Tri-State Area will be in the single digits and lower teens again early this morning... Winds out of the west and northwest yesterday did increase as expected, and it is still in the process of diminishing early today...

Therefore, it will "Feel Like" it's closer to zero, or in the single digits everywhere for a while this morning, and then it won't be quite as harsh after about 10 or 11 a.m.

Some early sun today will tend to fade behind increasing clouds, and we'll be turning the focus of our attention to a fast-moving, relatively weak wave of low pressure that will be approaching the mid-Atlantic states this afternoon...

That will be our "snowmaker", albeit fairly light and for only a period of 5 or 6 hours... Quantitative precipitation forecasts are now mostly UNDER a tenth of an inch (the liquid equivalent), so we tend to think that — unless this system really "overachieves," the snowfall accumulation totals will average a coating to an inch or two...

Those who see two inches will be "the exception, and not the rule"... With the snow tapering off quickly tonight, clouds will linger and most temperatures should wind up in the mid or upper teens...

As the low pressure system responsible for the snow late today and early tonight heads out to sea, it will begin to intensify just a bit... Therefore, while clouds early tomorrow should break for a fair amount of sunshine, there will also be a brisk wind out of the northwest that will average 10-20 mph with gusts of up to 25 or 30 mph possible... Temperatures mostly in the mid and upper 20s will "Feel Like" they're in the teens, and that wind will manage to die down tomorrow night...

Sunday looks like a relatively tranquil day around here with a good deal of sunshine, but most thermometers will still remain below the freezing mark... And, the much talked-about moderating temperature trend early next week will probably bring with it some headaches on Monday...

The leading edge of some milder and moist air pressing eastward will probably cause some light and spotty precipitation along the I-95 corridor... While it looks now as if most of that precipitation will occur during the afternoon, and even though air temperatures could be high enough to support plain rain — we must remember just how cold it has been this week, and how most ground temperatures will probably still be below 32 degrees until Monday night or Tuesday...

So, rain could freeze on some surfaces Monday, and rain could also start out as a period of snow in portions of the area, "if" it were to start early enough... It's a possibility we must consider, even though 90 or 95% of what falls may be rain, or a mixture of rain, sleet and freezing rain...

The temperature should climb into the upper 40s to around 50 on Tuesday, and should actually peak on Wednesday... During midweek, most temperatures should reach either the lower or middle 50s...

However, there is a possibility of rain both of these days, and it should start to turn colder on Thursday night or early next Friday... Preliminary indications are that the 'next shot of cold air' that will be felt around the Eastern Region next weekend and early the following week may not be as extreme as the one we've been dealing with this week — but most temperatures may still have a tough time climbing above the freezing mark on two or three consecutive days in early February...

Have a good weekend !!!
