Why Greenwich High School Shouldn't Cancel House Olympics

After the incidents that occurred on March 29, involving intoxicated students, Greenwich High School may decide to cancel House Olympics.

Greenwich Police and GHS school officials are still investigating the incidents that occurred on March 29, during House Olympics. At least six students were allegedly intoxicated on school grounds. In addition, at least one student was allegedly in possession of marijuana. Greenwich High School’s motto is “Freedom with Responsibility.” The students involved showed a complete lack of responsibility. The overwhelming majority of Greenwich High School students, however, acted in a responsible manner during House Olympics.  In addressing the school last week, Headmaster Christopher Winters said that while he understood most students weren’t involved, if House Olympics were to be continued next year it would be ‘very different.’

House Olympics is an event, in which the five different GHS houses compete against each other, in a variety of different competitions like ropes courses, soccer and improv. At Greenwich High School, House Olympics is one of the most anticipated events of the year. It helps raise school spirit for both students and faculty. It isn’t fair that a small group of students can ruin this event for everyone.

School officials need to determine whether or not these events were related to House Olympics.  Before Greenwich High School decides to terminate or diminish House Olympics, they should consider that the incidents might have taken place independently of the festivities. For instance, there is evidence that at least some of students involved were supposed to be in class, not House Olympics, at the time of the incidents. Also, in recent years, several students have been arrested for possession of marijuana on school grounds during normal school days.

House Olympics is a great event and is beneficial to Greenwich High School in many ways.  Hopefully, House Olympics will be part of Greenwich High School for years to come.
