This Day in History:
In 1848, at the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls, NY, a woman's rights convention—the first ever held in the United States—was organized and convened by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with almost 200 women in attendance.
In 1884, President Chester Arthur issued a proclamation that granted him and the federal government the power to quarantine persons entering the United States through its ports of entry to avoid the spread of "pestilence."
In 1989, the 21-year-old actress Rebecca Shaeffer was murdered at her Los Angeles home by Robert John Bardo, a mentally unstable man who had been stalking her. Schaeffer’s death helped lead to the passage in California of legislation aimed at preventing stalking.
