Why It's Fun to Run a Local Race

Entering a local race is a great way to experience your community.

Three weeks ago I ran the "Beachfront Bushwhack 5-Miler" at Tod's Point. The day of the race coincided with my 50th birthday  and I decided to make the run part of my celebration.

It was a beautiful morning – mild and dry – so I asked myself, why not? As always, the beach was spectacular. It was a cross country race along the beach and trails with obstacles, logs and bails of hay to jump or climb over.  The crowd was friendly and relaxed. I didn't look at it as a competitive race, but along the way that bit of competition comes out in everyone. You know you are not winning the race but you look ahead and say "I can pass that person" (especially when it's a 9-year-old girl!). This makes it more exciting and your heart starts pumping a little harder.  Along the way you get a closer look at the trees, sandy shore and the water view, what could be better than this and right here close to home in Old Greenwich.

I encourage everyone to participate in local races, no matter what your pace is. It is fun to be out there with your friends and neighbors.

On Sunday, December 11th at 9:00AM, join the "Jingle Bell Jog," a 3 Mile race starting at Threads and Treads on 17 East Putnam Ave. I will be looking for you!
