Fairfield County's Poverty Rate Up Since '09

Economists predict slow job growth in the state next year, according to BusinessWeek.

UConn economists reported in their latest quarterly economic journal that the overall poverty rate in Fairfield County grew faster than any other county in Connecticut, according to the CT Mirror.

Based on recent U.S. Census Bureau methodology, the county's rate is currently about 8 percent, economists wrote in the latest issue of The Connecticut Economy. Before the last recession between 2007 and 2009, the county's rate was at 7 percent.

Fairfield County's poverty rate, however, still falls below New Haven (12 percent), Hartford (10 percent) and Windham (10 percent). New Haven's rate jumped by one-fifth since the last recession.

The journal also predicts that in the state will be slow in 2012, according to BusinessWeek. Economist Steven Lanza said that depending on how the U.S. economy grows, Connecticut may only manage gains of 1,700 jobs each quarter through the end of the year.
