Former Greenwich Doctor Busted For Sex Offense Loses License in New York

The New York state Department of Health has ruled that Dr. Clifford Berken, a former gastroenterologist in Greenwich, is not fit to be a physician.

A who was sentenced two years ago in New York State on a first-degree charge of attempting to disseminate indecent material to a minor has reportedly had his license permanently revoked and will no longer be able to practice medicine in that state.

According to a report in lohud.com, the New York state Department of Health has ruled that Dr. Clifford Berken, a former gastroenterologist in Greenwich, is not fit to be a physician.

Berken, 59, was arrested in January 2009 in White Plains after he was caught having online “chats” with an undercover investigator posing as a 15-year-old boy, the report states. He was sentenced in 2010 to five years probation. In addition he is now a registered sex offender.

As reported on Greenwich Patch, the CT state Medical Examining Board reinstated Berken's license last year and allowed him to resume practicing medicine in Connecticut, but only under strict supervision. He reportedly never opened another practice — and his CT license has since lapsed, according to the lohud.com report.

Berken reportedly surrendered his medical privileges at Greenwich Hospital and shut down his private practice immediately following his arrest.
