Greenwich Scores and Standings: July 13

The Greenwich senior American Legion team again looks to clinch the outright zone four championship on Wednesday when the Cannons faces Fairfield at Seaside 1 (5:30 p.m.)

Greenwich (20-3) suffered just its third defeat of the season on Monday when it was shocked by Westport 3-2 at Staples High School.

Greenwich still has a 3 1/2-game lead over Norwalk (17-7) will four games remaining in the regular season. The zone champion gains an automatic berth into the state tournament.

Greenwich's Stephen Pastore and Theodore Humphrey each won two matches Tuesday to reach the round of 16 in the 94th Met Junior Championship at the Fairmont Country Club in Chatham, N.J.

Pastore defeated Colin McDadeof  Rye, N.Y., 4 & 2 in the first round, then ousted Michael Giannico of Blue Point, N.Y., 3 & 1 in the second round.

Humphrey started his day by outlasting Dak Spivey, Huntington, N.Y., in 20 holes. He then got past Sean Byrne, of Rockville Centre, N.Y., 1 up, to advance to the third round.

Two other Greenwich players -- Tomas Agrest and Daniel Weld - lost in the first round.

Pastore faces Matthew Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., and Humphrey takes on Cody Gross of Babylon, N.Y., on Wednesday morning in third-round patches.  They are the only players from Connecticut remaining in the field.

Greenwich and Ridgefield will face off for the Junior League Softball Championship on Thursday evening at 5:45 pm at Wilton's Middlebrook School. 

The winner advances to the Section 1 tournament in Orange on Monday with an opening game against the District Two champ at 5:30 p.m.

Greenwich defeated Wilton 12-2 Tuesday to finish 3-0 in pool play while Ridgefield edged Danbury, 10-9, to complete pool play at 2-1.

Greenwich outscored its three opponents by a margin 35-5, including a 12-2 win over Ridgefield.
