In a ceremony held at the Pentagon in Arlington, VA in 1947, General Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Florence Blanchfield to be a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, making her the first woman in U.S. history to hold permanent military rank.

In 1948, 42-year-old Leroy "Satchel" Paige pitched two innings for the Cleveland Indians in his debut with the newly—and barely—integrated American League.

2 New Recruits Hired by Greenwich Police

The ranks of will grow by 2 Monday morning with the swearing in of Christopher F. Palmer of upstate Northford, and Linda S. Rosenberg of White Plains, NY.

First Selectman Peter Tesei, who is the town's police commissioner, will conduct the swearing in ceremony in the Meeting Room at 11 a.m. today.

Palmer graduated from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2010. He has worked for a Planet Fitness franchise and as a software trainer whose job it was to train new workers on computer software and to evaluate their skills. He also served in the Junior Volunteer Firefighters Program at the Northford Fire Department when he was in high school.

Rosenberg earned an associate’s degree in paralegal studies. She graduated from SUNY Purchase in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and legal studies.

Rosenberg previously worked as a Community Service Officer at the New Rochelle Police Department. Her duties included answering 911 calls, front desk duties, and issuing non-moving violations such as parking tickets and meter infractions. She was also an equities trader for 8 years and a commodities trader for 10 years.

The department continues to hire new officers to fill vacancies created by retirements and promotions. and
