Strokes of Support of Cancer Research

Hundreds of swimmers are expected for this years 6th Annual which will be held Saturday, June 30.

Swimmers at all levels raise money for cancer research, prevention and treatment, in swimming events across the United States. The Greenwich–Stamford Swim has raised $1 million in donations over the years for the local beneficiary, the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT).  ACGT, the nation’s only nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to funding cancer cell and gene therapy research, is headquartered on the Greenwich/Stamford border and serves as the start and finish line for the swim.

In addition to swimming, there are volunteer opportunities for boaters, kayakers and on land.  For more information, visit www.swimacrossamerica.org or email Jacque Lang at Jacque@swimacrossamerica.org or call 203-438-0313.

Greenwich Traffic Officers Honored

officers James Ruszkowski and Robert Smurlo were honored at the Mothers Against Drunk Driving 26th Law Enforcement Recognition Ceremony for their work in trying to eliminate drunk driving in Greenwich.

According to Sgt. John Slusarz, head of the traffic section, "They are the leading arresting officers in the department. They have the top number of arrests."

Ruszkowski and Smurlo made more than 17 drunk driving arrests in 2011 while assigned to the department's saturation patrol efforts and checkpoints. In total, the department made nearly 100 drunk driving arrests last year.

Slusarz said the department's "very, very proactive" work will continue next week as officers will be assigned to saturation patrols—patrols designated to look for drunk drivers—for the July 4th holiday. The patrols will be conducted July 3 through July 7, Slusarz said.
