In 1972, Title IX of the education amendments of 1972 is enacted into law. Title IX prohibits federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex.

In 1992, Mafia boss John Gotti, who was nicknamed the "Teflon Don" after escaping unscathed from several trials during the 1980s, is sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty on 14 accounts of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering.

Sunday, June 24:

In 1901, the first major exhibition of Pablo Picasso's artwork opened at a gallery on Paris' rue Lafitte, a street known for its prestigious art galleries. The precocious 19-year-old Spaniard was at the time a relative unknown outside Barcelona, but he had already produced hundreds of paintings.

In 1953, Jacqueline Bouvier and US Sen. John F. Kennedy announced their engagement. Kennedy went on to become the 35th president and Jackie, as she was known, became one of the most popular first ladies  to grace the White House.

In 1966, the United States Senate voted 76-0 for the passage of what became the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, thanks in part to the efforts of consumer lawyer Ralph Nader.

Want to pay tribute?

You can pay to the heroes around us with the 'Salute to Veterans' program scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in Havemeyer Field, located between Greenwich Avenue and the rear of Town Hall. There will be a US Marine Corps precision team showoing off its dutiful expertise.

If you're headed out on the waters of Greenwich ...

Operation Dry Water 2012 will be held this weekend: June 22-24, just prior to the Fourth of July. Those caught operating a vessel under the influence may suffer penalties that may include arrest, fines, and loss of boating privileges, according to a statement from Greenwich Police.

The bottom line: don't drink and boat...just like you shouldn't drink and drive.

Operation Dry Water (ODW) is an annual campaign fothat focuses on enforcement of BUI laws and educating all boaters about the risks of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Operation Dry Water, a multi-agency, education and enforcement initiative launched by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) in 2009 in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, puts thousands of local, state and federal marine law enforcement officers on the water just before the Fourth of July to give BUI enforcement high visibility before a holiday known for drinking and boating – and deadly accidents.

"We want boaters to know the risks of drinking and boating,” says John Fetterman, law enforcement director for NASBLA and national spokesperson for Operation Dry Water.   “These are needless deaths in a recreational activity that is safe and enjoyable when people stay alert and follow the rules.”

Officers from all 56 U.S. states, trusts and territories are expected to participate in Operation Dry Water 2012, educating the public and being on the lookout for boat operators whose blood alcohol concentration exceeds the national limit of .08.

And, according to Greewnwich Police, their equipment is ready to go so there won't be anything that goes 'bump in the night.'

Island Beach Ferry schedule change
