MAP: State Tracks Bear Sightings in Greenwich

A look at bear reported bear sightings in Connecticut through February of this year.

 

There have been three bear sightings in Greenwich during the past year, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the agency that tracks Connecticut's wildlife.

According to the DEEP information released this week, 2,776 bears sightings were reported between April 2012 and February 2013, with the most coming from Farmington (239), Burlington (200) and Torrington (168).

In May 2012, Greenwich conservation officials issued a bear warning, citing limited anecdotal evidence reported by residents.

But it turned out to be more than anecdotal last June 6 when a black bear roamed the central Greenwich neighborhood of Chickahominy. The male bear was tranquilized, tagged and released in the woods of upstate Connecticut.
