Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich Scales Back Expansion Plans

The dealership has reportedly scrapped its plan to expand its facility at 217 West Putnam Ave. to 30 service bays, and will instead retain the existing 16 service bays at its 261 West Putnam facility.

, owned by Penske Automotive Group, is reportedly scaling back its plan to expand its service facility at 217 West Putnam Avenue in response to pressure from neighbors who based on concerns about traffic congestion, safety issues and noise.

According to a report in the Greenwich Time, the dealership’s owner, Roger Penske, met with residents of the contiguous Edgewood Drive neighborhood at the dealership showroom at 261 West Putnam in mid-January to discuss the , which involves both of the dealership’s sites. Then, in a meeting on Jan. 24, Penske reportedly announced that the dealership was withdrawing its plan to expand the facility at 217 West Putnam to 30 service bays, and that it would retain the existing 16 service bays at its 261 West Putnam facility.

Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich got approval in 2010 to expand its combined service center and showroom at 261 W. Putnam Ave. by about 7,500 square feet, bringing that facility to about 30,000 square feet. Expansion of that facility is already underway, however last fall the dealership returned to the commission with two applications requesting to convert the building’s 16 service bays into showroom space, and consolidating all service in a new, expanded facility at 217 W. Putnam, thus giving the dealership separate, dedicated facilities for showroom and service.

Meanwhile with its similar application to build a new, 24-bay service center on Old Track Road, allowing it to consolidate all of its service at one location, according to a Greenwich Time report. That plan is also seeing , who have also raised concerns about traffic congestion and safety.
