Patch Picks: Picnic Spots

It's May, and if you can get past the allergies of spring, some beautiful weather beckons those who want to enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors.

It’s May, and if you can get past the allergies of spring, some beautiful weather beckons those who want to enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors. Check out some of our favorite local picnic spots (but don’t forget the bug spray).

Greenwich Point Park (Tods Driftway, Old Greenwich): The quintessential picnic spot also known as “Tods Point” for Greenwich-based families and couples (and anyone with a pet!) has lots of picnic tables strategically placed for fantastic water views. The site includes two seasonal shellfishing areas that close during the summer and one approved area on the south side that is open during the summer.

Island Beach (Arch Street ferry area, 3,500 ft. from Great Captains’ Island): Island Beach – formerly known as Little Captain Island – is a bit cumbersome to get to by ferry, but if picnickers who just want a quick getaway without leaving town, it’s the perfect spot. The island beckons with 1,000 feet of fine sandy beach on its northern and eastern perimeters, has plenty of picnic tables, grills, a snack bar, and covered shelters.

Bruce Park (Bruce Park Drive and Indian Field Road, Greenwich, CT): If you’re looking for a nice family picnic in a spot oozing with activities (and culture, when you count the on-premises Bruce Museum), look no further than this park at the foot of Greenwich Avenue. Enjoy sandwiches and snacks while watching joggers go by, or hop on one of the grills for some spring barbequing.

Cove Island Park (1281 Cove Rd., Stamford, CT): Take a drive to this gorgeous park in Stamford for a change in scenery. In addition to ample picnic space and tables, this park boasts a big sandy beach, lots of water birds, and a one-mile walking/running loop. An expansive lawn is the perfect place for a catch or game of pickup soccer.

Binney Park (on Sound Beach Avenue in Old Greenwich, CT): Word has it the property known today as Binney Park was once a lush flood plain salt-meadow with a stream wandering through it on its way to Greenwich Cove. Today there are plenty of paved paths and picnic spots on its lovely, landscaped premises, along with tennis courts.
