Greenwich Reacts to Death of Terrorist Mastermind Bin Laden

Residents and workers in Greenwich expressed a range of emotions - happiness, relief and concern - about the news that Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces on Sunday.

"I was elated," said Greenwich Police Officer Craig Zottola, a US Navy lieutenant commander who spent 11 years working in intelligence including an assignment to the High Value Target Team that was charged with tracking bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and other terrorists. "It brings some closure to those who lost someone." (See video.)

The Town of Greenwich lost 12 residents in the terrorist attacks, and a total of 26 who had ties to the town - the most of any Connectiut town.

Susan Wohlforth lost her husband in the World Trade Center attacks. Martin Wohlforth was the managing director of the investment firm Sandler O’Neill which had offices on the 104th floor of the WTC's south tower.

Susan Wohlforth said that she and her daughter Chloe believe “justice has been served,” but she added, “I worry about the future.” She was emphatic when she told Greenwich Patch Monday morning that “I would give anything to meet the men who did this. God bless them.”

Outside the Greenwich Senior/Arts Center Monday, residents praised the work of the US military but were reticent on the consequences.

"I am very happy but I am also very scared that something will happen," said one woman who would not give her name.

"It's fantastic. But I'm more worried about the reprisals I think it will mean more deaths," said another woman, who also did want to give her name.

"I am glad to hear that they finally found him. I know it's a good thing," said Chris Moore, a resident of Cambridge, MA who was in town visiting a friend.

Greenwich Police Officer Daniel Hendrie was a New York City Police Officer at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He worked several days at the Trade Center helping with the recovery efforts. "I thought it was great. It is one of the best things I've heard in a while," said Hendrie. (See video.)

Greenwich Emergency Management Director Dan Warzoha said Monday that the town is continuing its "see something, say something" campaign, urging residents who may see anything "that doesn't look or feel right to call local law enforcement officials to check it out."
