Popular Safety Town Program is Back for Early June

 Safety Town is a comprehensive safety education program introducing awareness and prevention skills for youngsters entering a traditional kindergarten program in Fall 2014.  More than 400 children participated last year.

 

Originally brought to Greenwich by the Junior League of Greenwich, Safety Town is now a program of the Metro New York North Chapter of the American Red Cross. This year the week-long half day sessions will be held June 2 - 6 and June 9 -13 th  at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center. Morning sessions meet 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Afternoon sessions meet 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Topics covered in Safety Town include automobile. Pedestrian , fire ,bike, gun ,animal, playground and water safety , along with information about medicines and poisons and , traveling on trains and buses, stranger awareness and more.

Under the guidance of classroom teachers, police officers, fire fighters, EMS and other community helpers, children will be taught in an indoor classroom setting as well as on a specially designed kid-sized “Safety Town” layout.

Each child is fitted with their own bike safety helmet that they use for the week and then take home to keep. They will ride pedal cars and walk and “shop” through the town complete with buildings, crosswalks, sidewalks, street markings They will also tour an ambulance, fire truck and school bus. 

The daily lessons are followed up with take-home handouts and additional reference information for parents and caregivers.

Mary Young, CEO of Metro New York North, said, “The kids have  a great time while learning essential safety rules and tips. It’s important that they learn the roles of the first responders; this knowledge could make an important difference to them one day.”

Forms are also available at the Greenwich office at 99 Indian Field Road in Greenwich.   Tuition for the session is $195 and scholarship assistance is available.
