Letter: Krumeich 'Well-Suited' for 1st Selectman; Marzullo 'Definition of Pro-Active'

To The Editor:

I am endorsing the candidacies of Beth Krumeich, Drew Marzullo and the Democratic BET candidates.  An attorney, Beth is well suited for the position of First Selectman.  As a 29-year town resident she has served in a variety of volunteer positions and has been an active player in and an astute observer of town politics.  She is bright, energetic and lives and breathes integrity.  What can be said of Drew Marzullo?  In his two terms as a selectman he has become well known all over town for his attention to problems bedeviling our community.  He is the definition of “pro active”.  And both Beth and Drew endorse taking advantage of long term debt instead of the present system which stops at five-year maturities.

One may question why I take the time and printer’s ink to bother endorsing BET candidates when each is already assured of election.  It is because it is time for the town to adopt long term funding to match our long term capital projects.  It is also well past the time to take advantage of the lowest long term interest rates in many generations.  To do so will actually gain tax payers lower property taxes as well ensure the proper attention being paid to infrastructure and our schools capital projects and maintenance.  The BET slate with the most votes determines who will be chairman of the BET and, thus, who will control policy setting.  The two parties provide a stark contrast.  Let us follow the example of other AAA rated towns like New Canaan, Fairfield and Ridgefield in using longer term debt.  A vote for the Democratic slate is a vote for fiscal prudence and efficient town management.
