Connecticut gun control advocates are rallying the call for supporters to protest along the route New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will take when he comes to private fund-raiser for Republican gubernatorial hopeful Tom Foley.

Foley, a Greenwich resident who faces Fairfield Republican John McKinney in the Aug. 12 Republican primary, is the beneficiary of a July 21 fund-raiser at a private home in the private waterfront Greenwich neighborhood of Belle Haven.

Christie was on the receiving end of the wrath of gun control advocates in June, when he vetoed a bill that would have limited high capacity magazines to a maximum of 10 rounds.

Connecticut Against Gun Violence said in an email statement Thursday, "Foley has allied himself to Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) who recently vetoed a bill that would have limited high capacity magazines to no more than ten rounds. Christie also refused to meet with Newtown families who had asked to do so before his veto of the measure."

The group further stated, "Foley is no friend of common-sense gun laws, having stated "If I'm governor, any further attempts and restrictions on law-abiding gun owners by our legislature will stop at the governor's office.'' And “Had I been governor, the outcome in Connecticut would have been different.''

The group plans to stage its protest at the intersection of Shore Road and Field Point Road — the only route available into the Belle Haven neighborhood.

My son drove through the protest at 6:15 this evening and estimates 60-70 people lining Shore Road. That might not have been the peak of their attendance but that certainly sounds like a relatively meager showing given the advance planning, social media prowess of the organizers and the possible use of a bus to bring folks in from outside the Greenwich area.
