Community Corner

4th Annual Crop Hunger Walk

Mark the date on your calendars and plan to join the Fourth Annual Greenwich/Port Chester Crop Hunger Walk on  Sunday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m.  Registration begins at 1:15 at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, 1 West Putnam Ave. (top of the Avenue).  This gentle walk (about two miles) heads through town down Greenwich Ave., left on Railroad Ave., left again at Mason St. (with a rest stop at Scout Headquarters at 63 Mason), back to East Putnam, where the route turns right, finishing at Christ Church at 254 East Putnam Ave.  Strollers, wheelchairs, walkers, and pets on a leash are all welcome!  Community members are urged to join and walk with the other groups, schools, churches and community service organizations from Greenwich and Port Chester.

The purpose of the Walk is to raise funds to combat hunger around the world.  75% of the funds raised go to help fund the worldwide work of Church World Service (CWS), an organization that for over 60 years has helped fight poverty, hunger and disease, and also  provides emergency materials and funding following natural or man-made disasters.   One fourth of the funds raised from each walk are returned by CWS to the local community, with Neighbor to Neighbor in Greenwich and Carver Center in Port Chester each sharing a portion of the funds raised and of the food donated on Walk Day.  In 2013, the financial goal of the Walk is to raise $20,000.00, and each walker is encouraged to bring non-perishable food to supplement the food pantries of Carver Center and Neighbor to Neighbor.  Many enthusiastic walkers/fund raisers are needed to succeed in reaching these goals.   Readers can learn more about the walk, make a donation, or join a walk team by visiting the Walk’s website at www.crophungerwalk.org/greenwichct

Many churches and organizations in the Greenwich and Port Chester communities are involved in the planning and implementation of this year’s Walk.  These are joined by the Alan Shawn Feinstein Fund, which annually contributes more than one million dollars to hunger relief programs across the country.  For more information contact:  All Souls Parish, the Presbyterian Church of Port Chester at 914-939-4300, or the Walk’s headquarters church, The First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich at 203-869-8686 (ext. 119 for Josh).  Or contact Walk Coordinator at emacdow@att.net.  Direct donations in the form of a check or money order can be placed in your church’s offering plate or sent to:  First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich, 1 West Putnam Ave., Greenwich, CT 06830, or All Souls Parish, Attn. Ken Nilsen, 55 Parkway Drive, Port Chester, N.Y. 10573.  (please make checks out to “CWS/CROP”).
